The Shops at La Cantera were bustling Saturday afternoon, with 209 people walking past the bookstore Barnes & Noble in only 15 minutes.

Of those, 70 of them wore a mask or bandana, a measure recommended when in close quarters to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Another 42 wore them, but in more relaxed ways, tucked under their chins or hanging from one ear, with mouths and noses exposed.

Larger reopened businesses such as malls have faced more scrutiny for their policies, and many are requiring masks. At South Park Mall, owner Namdar Realty Group had posted signs about wearing masks, symptom screenings for employees, and stepped-up cleaning schedules.

For many area businesses, it’s opening day, but they will be pitching merchandise, not baseballs.

The Logan Valley Mall, with its anchors Macy’s and J.C. Penney Co., will not be reopening at this time.

“The governor has asked that enclosed malls remain closed, and we will be able to reopen during the green phase. … We will be sure to keep the community posted on a potential date for the full reopening, and in the meantime, we are in the process of developing a plan that will allow the mall to one day open under new cleaning protocols and social distancing guidelines,” said mall General Manager Dan May.

Mall staff has been working closely with ownership, Mason Asset Management and Namdar Realty Group, to ensure that the proper procedures and protocols are in place and enforced on the property to safely reopen.

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Ohio’s malls and retail shops are allowed to reopen on Tuesday under guidelines announced in late April by Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine. But things won’t seem normal on the retail side for quite some time and stepping into a shopping center or mall will be a new kind of experience in Northeast Ohio.

Employees, vendors and contractors at Ohio Station Outlets will be required to undergo temperature testing daily, and to check for flu-like symptoms, according to a press release from Namdar Realty Group, which owns Ohio Station Outlets. Employees will wear face masks and gloves while on property.

High-traffic surfaces will be cleaned regularly throughout Ohio Station Outlets, with retailers urged to do the same at their stores.
